...'D' is for... Downright Disturbing

Woke up early Saturday morning to overcast skies - with NO RAIN... yet! I went out to gather mulberries from the tree before the predicted storm took them all. While I was out there shaking the branches so the berries would fall on the sheet strategically placed on the ground, I was running my morning 'saling' agenda through my head. I had only three destinations on my list - Church rummage/yard sale, Estate sale and a streetwide sale - in that order. The Church sale is always a mad rush - packed with dealers grabbing anything of interest the minute it is brought out. The Estate sale is on an 'out of the way' backstreet on the edge of town. Hmmm... I decided to 'Live on the edge' and chance the Estate sale first. Friday I had gone to (or rather 'drove by') a so-called 'Estate Sale' that amounted to two card tables of stuffed animals in the front yard - so I knew this plan was a gamble.

My plan paid off!! It was a REAL Estate sale, they were cleaning out Grandma's house, and most of the Dealers were at the Church Sale!! Vintage Pyrex bowls for .10¢ & .25¢; Hankies for .25¢; Kitchen utensils and vintage shot glasses for .05¢; and the list goes on, and on...

Since there probably wouldn't be much left at the Church sale, I hit the street wide sale next. Lots of houses participating; not a whole lot of interest, but it was a nice walk and my finds were most 'memorable'! My favorite - a Kate Bush cd The Red Shoes!! Yes, we all know I'm a teen of the 80's... and love my 80's music... and 'Katie Lady' is an all time favorite!!

The most disturbing find of the day- a 'kids' book by Edward Gorey 'GASHLY CRUMB TINIES'. Maybe everyone else in the world is familiar with his work, but I had never heard of him before and this really caught me off guard! I had to buy it, just because it was SO BIZARRE!! It is kind of a Dark Dr. Seuss...
"A is for Amy who fell down the stairs
B is for Basil assaulted by bears
C is for Clara who wasted away
D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh..."
Complete with goulish graphics in Black & White!

M is for...Me. Me. Me. finds for the day - Kate Bush CD ($1.); 2 Beaded jewelry How-to books (.75¢ ea); 2 X-mas ornaments (.10¢ ea); 2 bottles of perfume (.50¢ ea); Home Interiors Figure (.25¢); 4 retro enamel pins (.25¢ ea).
C is for...
'CUERVO' - a 'so-tacky-he's-adorable' Home Interiors figurine that I picked up to join his compradre's (Jose', Pedro and Pepe') for a siesta in our garden.
R is for...
RESALE - Universal Ballerina grey pitcher and cake plate (.75¢ for both); Pyrex Bowls; JAPAN childs bowl (free box!); Anchor Hocking mug (.10¢); shotglasses and hankies!

I got home at 10:30am... just as the winds picked up, the rain let loose and a thunder/lightening show was our afternoon entertainment!

A few more pages from the book for your bemusement...

(was it necessary for them to include me??)

Awesome scores!!

I found Edward Gorey wrapping paper at a flea market once and sold it for a fortune on Ebay.

The Mexican dudes are hysterical. Love it.

Horray for your choosing a maybe over a definite good sale crowded with dealers, and finding such an awesome sale!! You really scored and the prices are almost too good to be true! Pet peeve of mine...Estate sales that aren't! I think the local advertisers should ask for a copy of the obituary before they run an Estate sale ad. Bit morbid, maybe, but it seems like an awful lot of folks are using the Estate sale heading, when it's really a "clean out the crap in Jr's toybox" sale! Of course, no one can be quite as disturbing as Edward Gorey, especially for a kids book, but I still like his books...but then I also like the "Nightmare before Christmas"...& Stephen King's my favorite scare-em writer!! Have a great Sunday! *elaine*
